Naming Policy and Notice of Suspension Orders

Naming policy for pharmacists subject of an order or direction

The Pharmacy Council has developed and published a Naming Policy, as required by changes made to the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (the Act) in 2019.

The Naming Policy sets out the principles and circumstances for Council to exercise powers under section 157(1) of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act.

Under the Act, the Council now has the discretion to publish a notice setting out:

  • the name of any pharmacist who’s the subject of any order or direction
  • the effect of any order or direction it has made in respect of the pharmacist
  • a summary of any finding the Council has made.

The policy balances Parliament’s expectation of more transparent decision-making by health regulatory authorities, against the interests of pharmacist’s individual privacy.
